Nanjing is the first "Famous Software City" in China, with more than 4,200 software-related
enterprises, including 120 software-related listed enterprises and 8 Top 100 software
business enterprises in China. The Software Institute of Nanjing University and the Software
Institute of Southeast University have been listed as the National Pilot Software Colleges.
In recent years, a number of major projects of leading enterprises such as AsiaInfo Security
Headquarters, Xiaomi East China Headquarters, ByteDance Nanjing R & D Center and Loongson
Technology Southern Headquarters have been introduced. In 2020, Nanjing realized the
software business revenue of nearly RMB 600 billion, ranking first in Jiangsu Province and
fourth in China in terms of the industrial scale. In 2021, Nanjing software and information
service cluster was shortlisted as national advanced manufacturing cluster in China.
Besides, Nanjing put forward the Action Plan on Promoting High-quality Improvement and
Upgrading of Famous Software City and Shaping Trillion-level Industry to fully support the
industrial development.
A complete industrial chain for new energy vehicle (NEV) has been basically established,
covering vehicle, battery, motor, electric control, electric air conditioning and charging
facility. Nanjing is one of the cities with the most complete NEV industry chain in China.
Nanjing is home to 10 NEV manufacturers such as Nanjing Automobile Group, Shanghai
Volkswagen Nanjing Branch and Chang’an Mazda, 7 computer chip enterprises such as LG New
Energy and Nanjing GuoXuan (and 4 enterprises under construction), as well as a number of
leading core component enterprises such as Yueboo and Aotecar. Moreover, a total of 14
corporate technology centers above the municipal level, as well as many domestic first-class
scientific research institutes and colleges, have been housed in Nanjing. In 2018, Nanjing
put forward the Action Plan on Building New Energy Vehicle Industrial Landmark to facilitate
industrial development.
Nanjing new pharmaceutical and life health industry covers six fields, namely, medicine,
medical engineering, medical treatment, medical information, medical system and
rehabilitation. Nanjing is home to over 20 biomedical colleges, topping the first in terms
of output of trained medical talents in China. Besides, more than 30 public technical
service platforms have been established, covering drug screening, animal experiments,
pharmacodynamics, etc. A total of 19 listed enterprises haven been housed in Nanjing, of
which four enterprises including Simcere Pharmaceutical, Aosaikang Pharmaceutical, Nanjing
Kingfriend and Nanjing Yoko were among the top 100 Chinese chemical pharmaceutical
enterprises. A number of new platforms such as the National Health Care Big Data (Eastern)
Center and National Genetic Engineering Mouse Resource Library have been launched
successively. In 2021, the industrial scale reached up to RMB 319.3 billion, keeping a
growth rate of 20% for five consecutive years.
The industrial system of integrated circuit, covering IC chip design, wafer manufacturing,
packaging and testing, equipment, and materials, has taken shape in Nanjing. Nanjing is home
to many industrial platforms, national and provincial key laboratories such as Integrated
Circuit Design Service (EDA) Industrial Innovation Center, Nanjing Integrated Circuit
Industry Service Center (ICisC), National Key Laboratory of Wide Bandgap Semiconductor Power
Electronic Devices, Jiangsu RF Integration and Micro-assembly Engineering Laboratory.
Moreover, a number of representative integrated circuit-related companies, such as TSMC,
Huatian Technology, X-EPIC, Silergy and Hengdian, have been settled in Nanjing, in addition
to 55 universities and research institutions including Nanjing University, Southeast
University, CETC NO. 14 Institute, and CETC NO. 55 Institute. In 2021, Nanjing has
accumulated 183 integrated circuit enterprises above designated size, with the operating
revenue of RMB 47.525 billion in total. In particular, the number of IC design enterprises
with revenue of over 100 million was 70, accounting for 12.6% of the total number of IC
design enterprises with a revenue of over 100 millio in China.
In Nanjing, AI related products and services have been applied in various fields such as AI
basic support layer, technical product layer, and application demonstration layer, thereby
forming an advantage in artificial intelligence software, intelligent robot, and intelligent
networked vehicle. Seven universities, that is, Nanjing University, Southeast University,
Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Nanjing University of Science and
Technology, Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Nanjing University of
Information Engineering, and Hohai University have set up the College of Artificial
Intelligence. Nanjing is home to over 400 companies specialized in R&D and application of
AI, and a number of key enterprises in the field of artificial intelligence, such as Huawei
Software, Minivision, Silicon Intelligence, Horizon Robots, Ticwatch, Yijiahe and Estun. In
2019, Nanjing put forward the Action Plan on Building Artificial Intelligence Industrial
Landmark to support AI industry development. In 2021, Nanjing achieved the revenue of about
RMB 13.5 billion in AI industry,with a growth rate of more than 35%.
In Nanjing, the smart grid industry has covered nine links of "power generation,
transmission, transformation, distribution, utilization, dispatching, communication,
comprehensive energy service and power network security", occupying a leading market
position in the secondary equipment of power transmission and transformation. So far,
Nanjing has gathered over 600 enterprises above designated level, 300 high-tech enterprises
and nearly 40 national technological innovation platforms in the fields of smart grid. Many
leading enterprises such as NARI Group, Najing Gaozai Gear and State Power South, have been
settled in Nanjing. In 2020, Nanjing realized the main business income of RMB 181 billion, a
year-on-year increase of 22.3%, ranking first in China. Nanjing smart grid equipment cluster
has possessed over 10,000 patents, including 4,000 invention patents, and taken part in in
the drafting of more than 1,000 international, national and industrial standards, with two
"China standard innovation contribution awards".In 2022, the municipal government issued the
Action Plan to Build a 500 Billion Smart Grid Industrial Cluster.
Nanjing has formed a complete rail transit industry chain covering R&D and innovation,
production and manufacturing, engineering construction, supply, operation and maintenance,
making it one of the few cities with complete industrial chain. Nanjing is home to many
advanced manufacturers such as CRRC Puzhen, CETC, Kangni Mechanical & Electrical, and Panda
Electronics, scientific research platforms and institutions such as Jiangsu Rail Transit
Research Institute and Jiangsu Rail Transit Comprehensive Test Base, covering main links
such as engineering procurement construction, vehicle manufacturing, door system, signal
system, and ticketing system, etc. In 2021, Nanjing accomplished the rail transit revenue of
RMB 96.2 billion, with more than 150 enterprises above designated size. Now, a pattern of
"one main and three supplements" is basically formed, which is dominated by vehicle
manufacturing in Jiangbei New Area, and supplemented by communication, signal, power supply
and fire control in Jiangning Development Zone, track door system and automatic fare
collection system in Nanjing Economic Development Zone, and spare parts and engineering
construction in Pukou Economic Development Zone.
Nanjing focuses on intelligent manufacturing equipment such as industrial robot and high-end
CNC to consider them as an important impetus for developing intelligent manufacturing and
promoting industrial transformation and upgrading. So, Nanjing has developed rapidly in
industrial robots and intelligent manufacturing system solutions, and formed an advantage in
machine manufacturing, key parts and system integration. In addition, a number of innovation
platforms have been built, including Jiangbei New Area Intelligent Manufacturing Public
Service Platform, Jiangning 5G + Intelligent Manufacturing Service Platform, Nanjing
Institute of Intelligent Manufacturing, Nanjing Funsmart Intelligent Technology Research
Institute. Now, Nanjing is home to over 1,500 intelligent manufacturing equipment
enterprises, and many leading enterprises such as CETC Guorui, Nanjing High-Speed Gear,
Schaeffler and Estun. In 2020, Nanjing accomplished the main business revenue of RMB 75.7
billion in intelligent manufacturing equipment industry.
